At TownNews, we believe success starts with finding the right people. The work we do here is changing the local media industry, and these are the people who are making it happen. Today we shine a light on Brett Carlson, Scrum Master.
What is your background?
Born and raised in Moline, IL, I graduated from Northern Illinois University. I landed at the advertising support desk at Lee Enterprises after traveling for eight years doing implementation, training, support, and some custom development for another software company. I spent almost seven years doing quality assurance for Lee and developed a passion for creating user documentation. Last November, I joined the TownNews team as a Scrum Master.
What do you love most about your job?
Dorkiest job title ever. All joking aside, I love building relationships and fostering a safe environment where people feel heard. Being in a position to serve so many wonderful and talented people has been incredibly rewarding. I appreciate them all more than I can say!
What are you currently working on that you’d like everyone to know more about?
A little bit aside to my current title, I’m pushing on getting better and more interactive documentation created both for internal and external partner use.
What are you most excited about for the future of the news industry?
I’m excited to see what changes come next, specifically seeing how those changes enable the subscriber to better interact with their news. And I'm excited to get to watch this team (and all of TownNews' partners) grow and thrive!
What's something people don't know about you?
After graduation I had the opportunity to spend 18 months as a blackjack, roulette, and craps dealer at a local casino. I have a penny collection and once spent $600 gambling on a roll of Lincoln cents with a uncirculated 1909s at the end – spoiler alert, I lost a little. I also love to gamble in general (sports betting, craps, poker), but one of my favorite things is getting to watch horse racing, preferably on track with few great friends!
